The best locations for this type of switch is either the top or strike side of the door but never the hinged side. They can then be painted over to blend in beautifully with your door. 1 1/4" slim line magnetic surface contacts are pretty much the alarm industry standard for most applications. These slim beauties almost disappear on your windows or doors. They come with double sided high strength adhesive which is great for application where drilling holes is not an option. I wont lie to you, these are ugly things but they're great for really rough environments. garage over heads and bilco doors tend to be loosely fitted at best so you need a strong and powerful switch that is made to order. This type of switch measures about 4 inches long and about an inch and a quarter wide. And it has a magnet strong enough to pick up your car,. Well not really; but strong enough to offer great reliable service on any loose fitting door that can be easily moved by heavy winds. 1/4" recessed contacts are great for windows.
